Rubber

Rubber processing is a hot, often dirty operation; the right lubrication cools and prevents problems such as varnish and minimizes wear on internal machinery components, including bearings.

Each industry has its own unique lubrication challenges to overcome. In rubber processing, these include fine, abrasive dust that can easily contaminate lubricant if not identified and mitigated; material degradation if leaks occur; grease oxidation from high-temperature exposure; clogs from hardened grease; and heavy/uneven loads.

DropsA has been engineering lubrication systems and components for a variety of industrial applications and environments, including rubber processing. Every solution is custom-manufactured, designed for easy field maintenance, and supported by our in-house, U.S.-based team.

Common Applications

Internal Mixers

Banbury-style and other internal mixers are power-hungry and see high loads and temperatures. Additives like carbon black also create contamination challenges for lubricants. Using the right oils and greases for rotors, shaft seals, gearboxes, and drive bearings lowers friction and energy consumption while extending maintenance intervals and prolonging asset life. DropsA offers seal panels for dust protection, progressive grease systems with monitoring, and advanced filtration.

A screw conveyor

Filler Conveying

Dust is a major problem when lubricating augers (screw conveyors) and bucket elevators. The wrong lubricant or application method will quickly cause build-ups that lead to contamination, increased loads, and premature failure of bearings, seals, and drive systems. DropsA provides sub-micron filtration that keeps debris out of lubrication systems. Plus, these filters can be easily replaced with minimal downtime.

Automated Batching Systems

Automated batching systems have complex lubrication needs. Valves, gates, and conveyors all use bearings, linkages, shafts, and drives that, without correct lubrication, will wear and possibly seize. Over-lubrication risks product contamination, leading to waste and downtime. DropsA’s centralized automatic lubrication systems ensure precise, timely distribution of oil and grease. Additionally, our condition monitoring devices help reduce oil change frequency and cut downtime while protecting against varnish and other problems.

Extruders

Gearboxes, thrust bearings, driveshafts, and mechanical linkages must all operate smoothly and with low friction. Sticking from varnish build-up can quickly affect production efficiency and even product quality. Our recirculating oil systems work well in extruder applications with heavy, continuous loads, and these systems can be configured with flow sensors and advanced filtration for added protection.

Injection molding machines in a large factory

Rubber Injection Molding Machines

Lubricants used in rubber injection molding machines are subjected to both high loads and high temperatures. Insufficient lubrication can cause excessive temperatures in bearings and slides, increase friction, and accelerate wear. Conversely, over-lubrication can cause dirt and grime to accumulate, leading to premature bearing failure.

DropsA’s automated single-line injectors and progressive dividers dispense the right quantities of oil and grease to clamping systems, platen movement mechanisms, and gearboxes exactly when needed.

Rubber granules

Granulators

Rotors place shock loads and high forces on bearings, and reliable grease lubrication is essential to minimize wear and ensure good alignment. However, in this dirty environment, it’s also essential to prevent contamination as seals deteriorate. DropsA’s custom grease pumps, progressive dividers, and filtered filler caps help reduce this contamination and maximize rotor life.

Tire Curing Presses

Tire curing presses are demanding; pins, bushings, pivots, and slides in mold opening mechanisms need EP or high-temperature grease to minimize wear and maximize both movement accuracy and equipment life, and the same goes for toggles and linkage mechanisms. Lead screws, ball screws, and nuts that provide motion are other critical lubrication points where friction reduction helps maximize process efficiency. DropsA engineers dual-line grease systems for applications like this with changing pressures and temperature swings that can impact lubricant viscosity.
